Lesson 1 – Creative Sampling – Introduction
In this tutorial, we will look at the basics of creative sampling. In this example, we will take a piece of dialogue from Public Enemy’s ‘Caught, can we get a witness?’ and use it in the same way that the sample is used in ‘Rock da funky beat’ by Natural Born Chillers.

|Step 1 – Introduction. Check you the original sample from public enemy and the backing track.|
|Step 2 – Import the Audio. Import the audio into the project from the media browser
|Step 2 – Truncate the audio ready for importing. Use the scissors and the scrub feature to find the start and end points of the individual samples before truncating. Turn on scrub by selecting Preferences/Audio/editing/scrubbing with audio in Track area.|
|Step 3 – Import into EXS24. Select all the regions you have split using the Shift key and pointer. Control-click (or right-click) to bring up the ‘Convert to new Sampler track.
Import setting should be, Create Zones from – Regions, Trigger note range should be set to C1 (36) to G8 (127). Press OK.
|Step 4 – Input the MIDI trigger notes. The MIDI notes will be created automatically when you create the new sampler track.
|Step 5 – Edit the MIDI notes. Drag the notes to the correct positions. Listen to the original for reference|
