Edexcel Component 4: Producing and Analysing Guide

The Edexcel A-Level Music Technology Component 4 (Producing and Analysing) exam is the ultimate practical test. In this 2-hour 15-minute exam, you are given audio and MIDI files and must edit, mix, and master them to a professional standard, alongside answering written questions about the specific techniques you used. It accounts for 35% of your A-Level grade.

Component 4 requires you to be fast and accurate in your DAW with:

  • Editing and Processing: Pitch correction, comping, and timing adjustments.
  • Mixing: Advanced use of EQ, dynamic processing (compression/gates), and spatial effects.
  • Mastering: Finalizing loudness and EQ balance.

The best way to prepare is through timed, practical exercises. We’ve developed a custom web app featuring interactive Component 4 style tasks and equipment routing diagrams to test your knowledge before exam day.
